Let me say this for the millionth time. Animation IS a film MEDIUM. A MEDIUM is the process/tools used to tell a story. Live action is a MEDIUM. Animation is NOT a GENRE. A genre is the type/category of story being told. Horror is a GENRE. Animation can be a MEDIUM used in ANY GENRE of film.

A live action that says animated characters are alive and exist in that world, a genre? Roger Rabbit. Space Jam. Cool World. Animeality

if you zoom in very close on the centre of this diagram, you will find all of studio ghibli films there.

Boom. When I saw this Venn diagram I was thinking (almost) the exact same thing. I was thinking: Rename the center "Studio Ghibli" for clarity.

Ответ для Ika

Ah, yes, including famous good-time-for-the-whole-family, 'Grave of the Fireflies'.

Ответ для Ika

most of the studio ghibli films

Good to know. I like explanations.

everything made by Ghibli~ you're welcome

Well and fairly said.

Who are the other films in the larger part of the blue circle made for? (Sorry, I just had to ask)

Ответ для nofancyhandle

They are just all animated films

Right, but "animated films made for kids AND adults" is not the empty set. It contains "Shrek."

Ответ для Panama Red

Yes...a family film

This is a sign I do tap.

Ответ для Changa_Husky

Ive tapped a hole through it

Until western studios start treating it like it’s a genre nobody in the mainstream will ever take it seriously as a medium. Can we get a movie that costs 150M here that isn’t under a family label? Please???

I just love the people who see animation and just assume oh it must be for children I wanna sit them down and make them watch Paranoia Agent or episode1 of Goblin Slayer and say ok still for children like wise a child would be bored to tears with Princess Mononoke

Completely agree. Also Anime isn't a genre. About the diagram, why are there so many animated films not for children or adults? 😆

Because im bad at venn diagrams

I find it hard to believe that you’ve found a million people who actually care, but you think you need to “set them straight”.

Ответ для sws1972

Well I care. So I dont really give a fuck?

And for the love of God, and all that pisses me off, stop treating animation as a worthless "template" to "remake the film for real".

And I'm only reposting this because the point of animation being a medium is already made clear and not because of downplaying idiots in the Cartoon Community that go something like this for example:

Flashing back to the time waiting in line at King Kong and a trucker cap mustache Florida Man type dude and his girlfriend were asking what movies were showing — and one was narnia “Maaaaan, fu— those cartoons” he said of narnia “It’s live action” said the ticketeer The man scoffed —

Ответ для Dottie Doggo

“There animals?” he chawed out “Yes” “they talk a’tall?” “Yeah, there are talking an-“ “Then it’s a FU—in’ CARTOON. Hard pass!”

Hi Brad Bird 😊

Tell that to Elon musk and Donald trump

One of the best things about Studio Ghibli films, is they primarily make their movies accessible to practically everyone. No one feels excluded or talked down to.

Animation is a process, the medium is what you made it out of and it may not be the same as the medium as it's captured or played back on

Lets not overcomplicate this man. Im just tired of telling people grave of the fireflies is not a kids movie just because its animated

Animation is the ultimate artform because it embodies all artforms. Graphic art, drama, music, dance and everything else in one artwork.

Should the Best Animated Film category then be removed from the Academy Awards?

Animation is also a vibe CG movies are animated, there is no real difference with 2D animations, but nobody would call Avatar an animated movie. Disney's 2019 lion king is a fully animated movie, but people call it "the live action Lion King" even tho it has zero real lions in it

Ответ для dioiioib

If you consider Who Framed Roger Rabbit an animated movie, you should also consider every movie that makes heavy use of green screen an animated movie, MCU movies or James Cameron's are effective the same thing as Roger Rabbit, they're made the same way. But we don't call them that.

I watched the original Moana yesterday. I watched Decorado Friday. The first is for all ages. The second is, uh, not quite. Going to use that as an example when people say "animation is for kids"

Ответ для hexnology

Kids will love unicorn wars

Like McLuhan said "...the medium is the average..." ?

Wait - so like, these are not the same genre?

Ответ для David Bayer

Baffling I know

Pink Floyd The Wall is one of my favorite semi-animated films.

I hope this makes it into film schools as a poster one day

There was a story i heard some years ago. The Spanish film council in the 90s was quite... lazy. They gave any film that was animated a G rating. ANY film. Youd think its bad with something like Shrek, no. Were talking Cool World. Fritz the Cat. Urutsukidoji... All given a G rating.

I mean, sure, but what's with the graphic. You made it look like there's a really tiny space with animated films that all ages can enjoy when I figure probably at least 20% of all animated films made fit in that category.

A lot of people bring up the "animation is for kids" argument by this but we also need to consider animated films tend to be more expensive and risky than live action films. And if the genre does not call for something fantastical or grandiose, studios would rather just make a live action movie.

So which are the animated films neither for kids nor for adults?

Ответ для yitzi2

This diagram implies most animated films were made for no one at all.

Ответ для Ian Boyte

Im sorry Jim im an artist not a venn diagram guy

When my partner and I started dating 5-ish years ago she had a similar misconception due to the bad stereotyping anime still gets. I've since showed her multiple anime she REALLY enjoys now! I feel like this is VERY common misconception.

Ответ для Teru

Same this with comics/superheroes and by extension manga/battle.

How do people not understand this?

Ответ для marklundvoice

Why do people get so wound up at one side of that disagreement vs the other?

Agreed. Let's try making more PG-13 and R-rated animated films. Maybe an animated horror film. Or an animated film as serious as a live-action film, just has cartoonish designs, wild angles and lighting, and surreal visuals. Then we shall see what people say about the variety of animated films.

Ответ для Cesar Jimenez

People couldn't handle each episode director of Kamiina Botan having a distinct style last season. I don't think the pop culture chasm will be bridged that easily. Lord knows anime has been trying.

Nice one Kasey

most of what I watch is animation!

Ответ для Kasey Gifford

well it gets the point across!

Ответ для Kasey Gifford

Oh ha. I complained and THEN saw this comment. But yeah, a huge percentage of animated films are made for all ages.

Inside Out…just sayin’
