As a Mancunian, I tell you the city's never been better. Its always been a hard place to live, & it can be rough & the city centre was worse for a long time but the city centre now is completely revamped and most mancs I know love it. Suburbs need work though to make them nicer and more appealing.

The city centre is an absolute hell hole though, and homelessness is still really bad. Sure it has been gentrified, but I feel worse going through town now than I did in 2016

That's your experience and I respect that, it's not my experience though of growing up as a teen in the 80s and a young man in the 90s, I'd say its been on the up since the 2000s If I was estimating, of course if didn't happen over night

Oh yes your right about the homelessness it's shocking, but you should see Bristol, I've never seen anything like it. Agree that we need to do something about it, I don't know what though.

Not mutual exclusive at all, better is relative to the how it was in the past. There has always been some homeless and poverty in Manchester. I'm just acknowledging there is always more we can do to be better still.

I lived away through work too for a while, came back home to live and there was a Northern Quarter, top class restaurants, world beating cocktail bars, and the good old haunts survived. I love going into town with my wife, I'm in my early ,50's now.

Housing costs in the city centre went from challenging to ridiculous after the pandemic. I used to rent a spacious 1 bed flat 5 mins walk from Piccadilly for £925 PCM from 2017-2021. Now you’re lucky if you can find anything under £1300 PCM in that area. It’s ridiculous.

Excellent stuff Zack! Talking of somewhere close to Greater Manchester, does @greenparty.org.uk have a specific view on the proposed withdrawal of funding for Jodrell Bank? If you and the Greens were able to help oppose this, it would be a huge boost! 👍

It's a shame that all the other cuts that the Science, Tech and Facilities research council aren't getting any attention from the media. The threatened cuts to Jodrell bank are not the worst for Physics and Astronomy by a long degree

I don't know enough to comment Sue, but I'll readily take your word for it. Science is at the heart of what an 'advanced' nation should be doing, surely?

Is he saying that all the new apartments are empty because nobody can afford to live in them? Surely prices would be reduced if that is the case. Rough sleepers have come to Manchester because of their “bed every night” policy and Burnham paid a not insignificant part of his salary towards it.

You fundamentally misunderstand the market for luxury apartments. They are seen by the rich as investments first, accommodation last. That's why the forces of supply and demand don't bring the price down when they are vacant. To so would lessen their investment value, their primary purpose.

That's not the case at all. Luxury properties can, and do appreciate in value even when not rented out. Also, some of the buyers of these properties aren't particularly ROI minded when it is essentially money laundering.

We have 'No Second Night Out' in Bradford and nobody claims that we have more rough sleepers because of it. We do get former rough sleepers 'social cleansed' from London boroughs, plus everywhere has seen an influx of early release prisoners.

Burnham walks the walk and talks the talk. Like a Manc. He was kicked out of the Labour Party and needed a cause to save his career. He managed that cause well. Manchester was doing fine before 2017 mainly due to the EU. As a Manc I do not trust him as PM, it’s a distraction to keep you happy.

As a Mancunian, I can honestly say, I don't recognise Manchester, it has changed a alot, but psychologically, culturally , it is now a wannabee London. Rents and house prices are shamefully high, and the corporate takeover stinks, pushing people out who are young, elderly, low incomed.

100% agree - parts of Manchester look like Canary Wharf! Capitalism enshrined in concrete and glass - it's tragic given Manchester's radical history! It didnt have to sell out to the property developers and money launderers!

Local authorities or regional bodies bypassing private outsourcing to build and retain social housing directly on public land. More affordable renting through the housing association model; community-led housing models—such as Community Land Trusts (CLTs), housing cooperatives.
