Bordeaux, France, has now recorded more days above 40°C in 2026 alone than during the entire 105-year period from 1920 (when observations began) to 2025. This is deeply shocking.

I've never seen anything like it. Salta, Argentina, has just recorded its hottest night on record during the climatologically coldest time of the year. The minimum overnight temperature did not fall below 26°C (78.8°F), pulverizing the previous monthly record by 7°C.

Satellite imagery shows how dramatically France's appearance has changed in just one month after two consecutive heatwaves, including the most intense ever recorded.

As you might expect, the recent unprecedented heat event across Europe has triggered an extreme marine heatwave in the western Mediterranean Sea, with sea surface temperature anomalies now exceeding +7°C in some areas.

This is getting ridiculous. Germany has preliminarily set a new all-time heat record with 41.3°C in Saarbrücken. Until this extraordinary heatwave, the country had never recorded a temperature above 40°C in June. More extreme heat is expected this weekend.

France will be at the epicenter of the most significant heat anomaly on the planet over the next few days. The sheer extent of the country that could experience temperatures above 40°C is nothing short of astonishing.

Can’t say I recall ever seeing this before. More than half of France’s 30+ year-old weather stations set/tied their monthly high-temperature record in May 2026. Some did so as many as 9 times. Unprecedented to witness this level of heat so early in the year.

Hard to believe I’m even writing this. Meteorological summer hasn’t even begun, yet Paris, France has already logged more days above 32°C than its annual average.

Today’s low temperature of 21.4°C in Camborne, Cornwall, was the highest May minimum temperature ever recorded in the UK and, in fact, the highest minimum temperature ever recorded at this station. This is a very significant record to fall by such an extraordinary margin.

I can’t believe it’s not even June yet and we’re already looking at the very real possibility of France reaching +40°C later this week. Literally hundreds of May records have already been set. Truly unprecedented to witness this level of heat so early in the year.

As the first reanalysis data become available, I think I can say with a fairly high degree of confidence that the March 2026 heatwave will go down as the most anomalously extreme heat event ever observed at any time of year in the southwestern U.S.
