Oh did a female academic with an extensive history of study and practice in a particular area of literature make a reasoned critique of a male filmmaker’s movie? I’m sure this will be handled with maximum normality.

People who think Emily Wilson is being mean have clearly never presented a paper at an academic conference

the criticism of emily wilson “not being a movie enjoyer” and therefore not able to offer useful criticism by virtue of not understanding the medium would maybe feel more appropriate to me if it was not in defense of christopher nolan, who i question whether knows what movies are either

its also a little bit embarrassing to see all of these self-styled “film connoisseurs” tut tutting a miracle talent like wilson and going “you may have produced one of the most significant works of literature in recent history, but i happen to review movies on letterboxd regularly”

to be clear “knows what movie are” is a useless criteria for being able to produce good criticism of one, but if it can be applied to wilson for thinking a work of art should have complex ideas, it can equally be applied to nolan for thinking, i don’t know, it’s important for movies to be big

some of the reaction to wilson’s review feels strangely defensive of film as a legitimate medium. it honestly reminds of the way gamers respond to criticism from, well, anyone. on that, what the hell? we’re well past that, and we can rest very soundly when a writer calls a nolan film not very deep
