I was thinking about the movie "Naked" (1993) this morning. Characters are all some combination of dumb, bad, feckless naive, mean...big on offense, plot is light on comeuppance. How would that be read today? Moral criticism is baby-brained shit, but that's increasingly what we get.

This is what I was posting about the other day - character flaws get read as "so this author is condoning..." No, this author is reflecting, constructing, exploring... If the story is "nice people doing good things respectfully in pleasant weather," it's not a goddamn story.
