The interesting political question is what happens in Salem - will the state legislature simply preempt whatever Portland decides to do?

Regarding The Whole Waymo Thing™, a collateral issue for Council to wrestle with is what goes in code and what goes in administrative regulations. And, if things go in regulations, is there proper authority in the code to promulgate them. Relying on stale ordinances to write new regs is risky.

Some interesting briefings in City Council's Public Works Committee this morning -- an update on the implementation of the new transportation funding packages (which seems to be coming along fine), and an update on The Whole Waymo Thing™ (which seems like Council might have lots of work to do).

Both the City and the County need to hold hearings and demand accountability. And the cherry lobby needs to make things right to settle the class claims: Something like free frozen treats for the month of August for class members. Plus attorney fees, obvs. 6/6

With early numbers indicating that a Portland ballot initiative to hire additional police officers is falling shy of the valid signatures needed to place it on the November ballot, its backers on Monday levied explosive allegations about political bias during the signature-counting process.

Shoutout to @wweek.com for linking to the legal memo complaining about the signature verification. I don't think the rambling memo and the panicked declaration from the FieldWorks guy is going to be enough - the signatures are either valid or not, and it seems like a shit-ton of them are not valid.

The sworn-officer union chief should know better than make allegations without factual foundation.

Having observed the robust signature review processes and procedures in Multnomah County Elections for *ballots,* I find it REALLY hard to believe there are "thousands of valid voter signatures being thrown out" in this ballot measure validation.
