An odd thing is how close it is to American culture: both are obsessed with national self-definition ('the great russian novel' vs. 'the great American novel) and both feature constant middle-to-high-class artists venerating of 'the farmer' as the true representation of the folk spirit.
Tom ShapiraNatasha's Dance by Orlando Figes. A really good non-fiction book, though despite the sub-title it's actually about 'high culture' (from Tolstoy to Eisenstein) rather than 'culture.' The jey to its success is that Figes' doesn't let his love of the culture overwhelm the grim reality that birthed it.
