Also, pretty much none of 'the greats' come off well. Tolstoy in particular is a piece of shit - and Figes never presses that point (in fact, he could've probably pressed it a bit more)

An odd thing is how close it is to American culture: both are obsessed with national self-definition ('the great russian novel' vs. 'the great American novel) and both feature constant middle-to-high-class artists venerating of 'the farmer' as the true representation of the folk spirit.

Natasha's Dance by Orlando Figes. A really good non-fiction book, though despite the sub-title it's actually about 'high culture' (from Tolstoy to Eisenstein) rather than 'culture.' The jey to its success is that Figes' doesn't let his love of the culture overwhelm the grim reality that birthed it.

In what might be the most 'tom shapira moment' ever I tried to calm younger nephew after he erased a photo he really liked by explaining Tarkovsky lost most of his original stock of film for STALKER, but it all turned out well. This did not calm the nephew very much.
