Unless we understand this permission structure, we understand nothing. Not how the GOP got to this point - nor where it is likely going next and why, as a default, we must assume Republican elites will continue to find ways to allow themselves to fuel and enable extremism.

It’s a piece about the relationship between opportunism and ideology, cowardice and reactionary conviction; about the logic of escalation that is fueled by a sense of having burned all bridges; and, ultimately, about the permission structure that has governed rightwing politics for decades.
