NetSci 2026

The torch has been passed! 🔥 As our final #NetSci2026 post, we're thrilled to welcome the hosts of #NetSci2027: SynoSys, Center Synergy of Systems, and Technische Universität Dresden. 🇩🇪✨ Boston was unforgettable, now it's time to count down to Dresden. See you on the Elbe!

#3/5 of our open Postdoc positions will critically examine mathematical modelling from a human angle and seek to empower people to discuss and question mathematical models. We believe that if models can be challenged in new ways, modeling can only profit. #human_progress hifmb.de/institute/hi...

The second of our five new #human_progress postdoc positions will analyse maritime logbooks and other materials from the www.prizepapers.de dataset, a large collection of documents captured by pirates! Let's find out what they reveal about the oceans! hifmb.de/institute/hi...

#1 of 5 open PostDoc posts will study how the words we use reveal our thinking about the marine environment. Did you know that most prospective marine protected areas are named after sea-floor features? And, who has the power to name areas, species, etc? How does this affect the research agenda?

I am so excited about this: We are doing a new kind of project with the aim of transporting knowledge and methods from the humanities into a natural science context. We'll have 5 full 3yr postdoc positions! I will post more in the coming week. But here is a preview: hifmb.de/institute/hi...

This was a fun project. Working with some old but very cool maths... #netsci people will like.

This was a fun generalized modelling project with @janamassing.bsky.social @akfbio.bsky.social and @jdyeakel.bsky.social. Bacteria really need generalized models to make the maths fit properly.

Jana C. Massing

Hey math and microbiology enthusiasts! 🧮🦠 If you’re curious about bacterial cross-feeding and want to see generalized modeling in action, this paper might be right up your alley. Big thanks to @akfbio.bsky.social, @thilogross.bsky.social, @jdyeakel.bsky.social - I learned a ton from you all!

Very happy to be part of this project. My take on it is, hypergraph or network can describe the same systems and yield the same phenomena. The decision really comes down to if you want to work with matrices or higher-order tensors to explore these phenomena.

Leto Peel

New preprint w/ @tiago.skewed.de, @manlius.bsky.social & @thilogross.bsky.social! Graph edges define the interaction domain — functional form is free Hyperedges constrain by grouping nodes into subsets: special case, not a generalisation Multilayer graphs represent any hypergraph — not vice versa

The rot is spreading ...

Christopher Dornan

Just a reminder that Orwell’s protagonist in 1984, Winston Groom, works as a copy editor, except that his job entails endlessly “correcting the data” so that the archival record conforms to the Party’s preferred fictions, and what is “known” becomes a principal instrument of conformity.
