This has a lot of impact on the ground. On the queer front there's an entire sector — Gay Inc — and plenty of more established media built around the idea of rights as something handed down by elites. They erase and sanitize more radical figures in the past. In the present they call the cops.

An underrated prop of societal hierarchies is where the emphasis for historical change is placed: with the elites, erasing people and movements. So it's "LBJ passed civil rights laws" and not "LBJ frantically conceded to increasingly powerful movements and upheaval." See the difference?
