Dick and Barbara's relationship not working out, ultimately, is sad, but doesn't break the characters. Barbara having feelings for Bruce likewise doesn't break her, especially if she's allowed to move past it. Bruce pursuing? That breaks things. That breaks him.

Obviously, a character can be flawed and inconsistent, because so are real people. But this shows a lack of growth, taking Bruce from "flawed guy whose heart's in the right place" to "actually kind of an asshole." It makes Bruce's solitude in Beyond less tragic and more like it's what he deserves

Bruce's issues with Dick working with Selina take a light of being possessive and controlling, rather than truly protective, if he doesn't have issues with the obvious imbalances of a relationship between himself and Barbara.

Earlier episodes don't help matters. "You Scratch My Back" highlights the strangeness of Catwoman, Bruce's contemporary, in a potentially flirtatious relationship with Dick, and "Over the Edge" places a lot of focus on Jim Gordon as Batman's contemporary.

It kind of breaks the episode's message, that Dick was wrong about Bruce, and people can change, since it seems that Dick was kind of right about Bruce being manipulative, and Bruce pursuing a relationship with Barbara shows he's putting himself before the best interests of both Dick & Barbara

Bruce's characterization here in his scenes with Barbara, which is meant to be protective of Dick, and furthering his paternal role, becomes outright manipulative of her if he's got a mutual interest, as is established later.

I've been doing a rewatch on the DCAU & just got to "Old Wounds", which is one of my favorites. It also sticks out to me, in light of all the weird Bruce/Barbara stuff that followed, as a more explicit example of why the relationship just feels wrong.
