I don’t care how respected you are as a person, science educator, author, artist, etc. If I find out that you are using generative AI in any aspect of your work, you lose all of my respect.

AI agent activity in online surveys is far less common than assumed. Across 10 sample providers, agents showed up almost only on MTurk (11-16%), elsewhere at or below 1%. @andrewgordon.bsky.social presents findings today at Quirk's, NYC. Connect if you're there 📄 #AcademicSky #ResearchIntegrity

Any news report that starts “OpenAI says…” or claims “an AI” (sic) has “broken containment” or “gone rogue” is no longer doing journalism, but PR for the #AI industry. #OpenAI used their product to hack a third-party and failed to implement adequate safeguards. That’s it. That’s the story. #AIHype

13. Hence our dismal conclusion: rather than finding that LLMs free us to do a better job of what we were doing before they came along, they shift scientific incentives (and the playing field of academic competition) in ways that compel us to do more and more, faster and faster, less and less well.

Twice a year, Hawai'i experiences a strange moment where the sun appears to be exactly overhead & anything that is completely vertical casts no shadow. Let's learn about Lāhainā Noon, subsolar points & 'Kau ka lā i ka lolo', meaning "the sun rests on the brains."

I cannot think of anything that might incentivize students more to use AI in coursework, even against their own self-interest when it comes to learning, than putting them in a head-to-head competition for A's in a class. (Also I just think this is deeply unfair.) www.thecrimson.com/article/2026...

How can aesthetic pleasure be shaped by so many visual attributes: prototypicality, fluency, complexity, symmetry, and self-relevance? I argue that aesthetic pleasure emerges from a balance between categorization-based rewards and metabolic costs of neural activity. doi.org/10.1016/j.co...

as genai proliferates, it has become difficult to avoid it. at @aial.ie, we're compiling a list of genai-free tools, libraries & websites to support research across tasks;grammar/spell check, coding/code review, data analysis (esp large scale text classification) & graphing/data visualisation recs?

Given the outrage this image has caused, we can see that people do, in fact, interpret bar plots with truncated axes correctly, as research has shown for a long time. 😇 @steveharoz.com

I ran an absolutely 100% human, zero AI-involvement at any stage passage of my writing through an "AI detector," curious if it could really tell human from AI work, and it said my own writing was "84% AI written" then asked I wanted to pay to have it "humanized." So there's that to keep in mind.

When I explain to peeps how much we do in research labs for how few $$, they simply don’t believe me. I once explained it to a famous person from Pixar, he looked me square in the eye and said “You mean all the cancer, vision, and Alzheimer’s grants work that way? You’ve gotta be %#ing kidding me!”

The NIH is an ENORMOUS bargain for the American people. Do folk think that private industry will do the background slog work for drug discovery for 250K direct costs?

Two years ago, my colleagues and I were sued by Stephen Miller's America First Legal. The Hines v Stamos case — built atop a number of false allegations — was a central element of the "censorship industrial complex" myth. Today, that case was dismissed (by a Trump judge in LA). We won.

Several great colleagues published an excellent paper on multiplicity adjustment. Wish it considered that "assertions are too easy" is miscast as multiplicity. See hbiostat.org/bayes/bet/mu... @sabinehoffmann11.bsky.social @gscollins.bsky.social @georgheinze.bsky.social

New paper finds that cul de sacs, winding streets, and other features of suburban "Garden Cities" are terrible for emissions, loneliness, etc. IOW: Sprawled suburbs are bad because of how they're designed, not just their sprawl. www.nature.com/articles/s41...
