Yes that’s the point. The aggregate doesn’t matter. If I can’t buy the same set of goods I did last year even with higher real wages then I am impacted.

Being able to afford 2 TVs and no concerts doesn’t feel good when I used to be able to afford 1 tv and 1 concert. Inflation is not felt in aggregate.

Was at Costco today. Used to buy 3 Ribeyes for 60-70 bucks then last year 3 ribeyes were 90-100 bucks. Today _2_ ribeyes were 90-100 bucks. (I vacuum seal them and have one every 6-8 weeks or so).

Additionally inflation is not uniformly distributed. If I used to be able to afford 1 TV and 1 Concert, and now I can afford 2 TVs and _NO_ concerts, then I am less well off. The pain of what is gone without exceeds the pleasure of abundance I didn't need.

People experience wage growth instantaneously and inflation _over time_. You have seasonal costs (school supplies), annual costs (taxes, vacations, etc). So while you may strictly be ahead you get one time joy and continuous pain for a year or two. psychologically inflation is corrosive.

Writing 'big' software requires so many non-technical resources (marketing/legal/training/testing) that any AI productivity gains are minimal (writing the software is only 15% of lifecycle anyway) Writing small software (in house, prototypes) is small ball anyway so will have only small effects.
