My underlying point is that the slavery of the Homeric poems presents a basic problem that modern audiences, critics & adapters like Nolan often prefer to skirt bc no narrative from such a culture gives permission to critique slavery. By design the narrative makes you accept slavery, or look away.

In other words, in a modernizing adaptation, why is Circe treated as righteous for the kind of aggression and trickery that Odysseus is meant to be ashamed of?

Here's a take that will provoke Bsky: Nolan's audiences are remarkably infatuated with Circe for reasons that call attention to something they're remarkably willing to overlook - that she's a slave owner whose hospitality depends on slave labor, and her magic exists to enslave every man she meets.
