Introducing the undulating tripod gait, the walking strategy used by many fishes. We tracked the fishes, built a model, a robot, and found that 3 body segments, 2 fins, and friction are all it takes. No specialized anatomy required. Out today in Nature Communications www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Riojasaurus is up next! This is a medium sized sauropodomorph, about 6m long - though I have found one mention in the literature of a possible 10m length. Thought to be quadrupedal in the past, work by @skeletaldrawing.bsky.social suggests a primarily bipedal animal. Size comparison below ⬇️

The amount of AI generated art in slides at this conference, primarily used by older scientists, is killing me. Scientists please. Don’t use these ai platforms to make your figures or slides. They look bad and I have yet to see them meaningfully improve the message of talks.

If you’ve never seen the comic, here it is:
SK Winnicki, PhD 🏳️⚧️I knew the first half of this story— that Gary Larsen’s cartoon joking Dr. Goodall was sleeping with chimpanzees caused her Institute to lawyer up only for her to find the comic super amusing upon her return from the field— but I’d never heard Larsen got attacked by a chimpanzee!

Kids, being cute but demanding since the Cretaceous. A quick little doodle of a baby Maiasaura, inspired by the recent study reinforcing the idea that they stayed in the nest for a good while and needed intensive care. Based on the lovely skeletal by @skeletaldrawing.bsky.social

David James Armsby has done it again! Dinosauria is, in my opinion, the pinnacle of what paleo-media can be. I can't wait for the next one! www.youtube.com/watch?v=OH57...

And this, dear reader, is why we use references. The top illustration was done some time ago, largely from memory. A museum wanted to licence it, but I insisted on reworking it first, to make it more accurate and appropriate for an educational setting. The difference is kinda dramatic! 😳
