in writing this i had occasion to revisit smucker's HEGEMONY HOW-TO, always worthwhile. i was struck by what i had forgotten. smucker discusses how nominally outward-facing actions are used to secure in-group standing, but he presents this as how it feels from the inside: as a matter of identity.

what i think is quite striking is that these "deconstructions" themselves implicitly accept the natural problematic as a framework: "if it were natural, then it would be essential and inevitable and good." but that itself is giving away far too much: the natural world, too, is subject to change
