Writing my way through the details. Published in a variety of spaces. Big on faith, film, community, biking, and NUFC/O’s. Views are my own.

I’ll say this much, it’s been a hell of a week being a devoted fan to both the Baltimore Orioles and Newcastle United. #nufc #birdland

"The future is strong, and I think it starts right now." Something Mike Elias dares to say after trading away the face of the franchise. Maybe he should read this scathing article about the past decade of Orioles baseball.

“The Orioles, nine years into a never-ending rebuild, are still in discovery mode.” Scathing. And rightfully so. www.si.com/mlb/orioles/...

Mike Elias has zero class, and apparently zero clue that he has been in control of this roster for nearly a decade. He’s now gaslighting an entire fanbase by say he “didn’t dismantle the team” in response to him trading the beating heart of said team.

Mike Elias, in an opening statement, thanks Adley Rutschman. "It is an incredibly emotional moment to have Adley depart the organization this way." Elias said Rutschman embraced the challenge of being the first pick in 2019. "This is an unfortunate reality of the business."

The Orioles will now lean on Samuel Basallo, but who does Sammy get to lean on? A clueless manager? A horrendous GM? An owner who doesn’t seem to care? We need a clean sweep of firings, immediately.

As a fan for 30 years, I have never been more disappointed in how this org has mismanaged the talent in the clubhouse. Even during the down years, they did the best they could. Buck eventually showed us the way. Elias? He’s proven with this trade that he’a failed miserably. Again. Gutted.

Not sure my fandom heart could handle Adley being dealt during the same week that Eddie Howe resigned from Newcastle. But here we are. #nufc #orioles

We’re in the endgame now. And all of the fanbase deserves to be livid.

Step 2: TBD, but Elias is likely going to sell off Ward and others for prospects who won’t help the team now or within the next few years, all while repeating “I said we’d be buyers and sellers, sellers and buyers. What do you want from me? Ultimately, I love a good rebuild!”

“Bronk said that the poems emerged in his mind as he went through the business of the day. When one was ready, he put it on paper, working in longhand rather than at a typewriter.“ Love that William Bronk understood that 80% of writing isn’t done when you’re really writing, but when you’re living.

Read and now re-reading Jack Gilbert’s poem “Burning and Fathering: Accounts of My Country” because I remain floored.

BREAKING: The Baltimore Orioles have traded manager Craig Albernaz in exchange for a hopeful future. More to come.

Yes to all of this. Dodgers are doing what every other team *could* be doing, we just find it annoying because it’s not our team. Also, the package for Skubal was likely beatable, but here we are. And as Matt points out: financials/age/contracts are gonna be LA’s problem very soon. Go O’s.

Matt Trueblood

I find the 2026 Dodgers unimposing. I think the Brewers can beat them in a best-of-7 even with Skubal. But just as importantly, this is a window. The Dodgers are making the most of their window. Good for them. It IS gonna get ugly for them soon. Be chill.

In discussing writing practices last week, I was shocked that I was the only one who said that I write within the chaos of the days schedule. Most others spoke of “getting away” to write, or having a “writers room.”

Would be very cool if we could swing at strikes and lay off others, aye? All the chances in the world and the Orioles just keep letting Baz down.

Fantastically detailed thread on Nolan’s DUNKIRK, which is somehow still significantly under appreciated. It might also crack my personal Top 5 for the director.

All The Right Movies

DUNKIRK was released 9 years ago today. Christopher Nolan’s first war film, and acclaimed as one of the great World War II movies this century, the story of how it came to be is as epic as the film… 1/44

Mike Elias watched this, sighed deeply, and likely thought to himself “that damn triple is gonna force me to get off my ass and make some deals, huh?” Gunnar Henderson, welcome back.

This made me tear up.

Mike Elias talks about this team like he’s not responsible for setting it up or repairing it in any way.

Mike Elias: "We haven't played great defense as a team. The results have been bad there. I think we knew going into this that the team wasn't built around defense, but we could've played better than we have been, and when you have some defensive lapses, it's going to show up in close games."
