The lab leak theory has legs because it plays to a particular frailty of the human mind. When something large and bad happens (COVID), we are wired to think that an agent is responsible for it. Structural explanations, viral evolution, etc. doesn’t meet our brain’s causal requirements.

My book is nearly complete & I'm looking for people to beta-read it. The book is about rivalry (or competition) from where it starts in the brain all the way out to civilization itself. It explains a whole ton of stuff we see in everyday life, including our current state of politics.

Survey data worldwide shows ~33% of people have an authoritarian predisposition in politics. This is pretty consistent with retaining just the ones who are right wing and then a smaller outer ring of people who don’t follow any news at all.

I often wonder whether Yglesias or Klein know they are cultivated by rich people to prevent positive change. That’s why they were let into the elite circles they run in. Because they are useful.

I call this “social enforcement.” People are sensitive to being the odd one out of a group and because of this will outwardly try to conform. And authoritarianism makes this worse due to the underlying current of violence in the movements, making being the odd one dangerous.
