*whispers* you know we can do this cultural debate about art thing all the time, right? Websites and news organizations used to have culture critics on staff whose entire job was writing about books, movies, and TV. People read them and then discussed them. We have the technology to do this again.
In the second book in this series, there's a sequence where the empty, contrary nihilism of a "great thinker" is so annoying that someone kills him. Been thinking about that sequence a lot. Peake would have lost his mind in 2026.

Peake is funny as hell, and Gormenghast has several sequences that play as much for black comedy as anything else.
