Done The 3-book, ~1000-page ode to 20c NYC is over. I don’t know what the Great American Novel is, but surely, collectively, this trilogy is something like it. Gonna miss the HSU (Harlem Shuffle Universe) … until, inevitably, I read the books again 📚

I have the sense that a lot of educators are done with partial policies ("if you use AI, you have to cite it"), as well as with the grim task of policing the technology, and are instead (like me) just turning their whole class into a defensive apparatus.

The part where Wallace Shawn looks at his quail and says “God, I didn’t know they were so small” and then camera cuts God/Death/The Waiter looking like “how dare you?!” … it felt epic, in the ancient poem sense. Like ageless divinity looking down at mortals still surprised by fact of mortality

you ever get bummed out when you realize that the bad alternate 21st century of BACK TO THE FUTURE II turned out to be a prophecy

I’ll see ODYSSEY soon and then read Wilson’s review but for now I’ll just say it’s kind of a baller move to shred the movie that is directly responsible for selling millions of copies of your book lol respect

It is slightly weird that people are going after Emily Wilson for not being a film critic. You aren’t either, and yet Here You Are, talking, in public, about a movie, like everyone. (I hate “stay in your lane” / “stick to sports” talk so much, for Reasons)

All ODYSSEY-hating is gonna seem tepid after Virgil, who wrote an entire epic just to drag Odysseus’s ass, and Dante, who followed suit by consigning Odysseus to the 8th Ring of Hell.

Can’t wait to see THE ODYSSEY so I can have a loud & smug & obnoxious opinion like everyone else. It is my birthright!

These men are in many ways silly or pretentious or cliched but somehow that only makes the movie more devastating

My hot Odyssey take is that punishing the suitors for personal crimes is fundamentally different than making war on an entire city population on account of one prince’s misbehavior — and this distinction has a ton of obvious modern-day parallels that make me wary of anyone who papers it over.
