Those of us working in SE Asian studies, with gigs in the US, are very familiar with trying to call out or resist this kind of political intimidation under right-wing regimes in Thailand, the Philippines, etc. Now we face it here. Authoritarianism anywhere is in fact and actually everywhere.

This seems like another urgency -- that systems shouldn't be trained on our work (writing or speaking), without both permission and compensation.

These are garbage indictments, as he notes. They're meant mainly as warning shots, and the administration is inept as hell at convictions, which take actual work and legal strategy (not to mention cause). Still, people suffer, communities suffer, free speech suffers while they harass and intimidate.

Big fucking ups to this quote from Dr. Davis tho: “It’s bewildering. It seemed weird and laughable,” Davis said of the indictment. “It felt like the length of the indictment was a cover for how thin it actually was. I’m a professor. I’ve seen people pad out papers when they’ve got nothing to say.”

thanks for the informed insight! Indeed, it's clearly a new frontier (for education). Curious to see how it develops. I'm glad there's thought to preventing schools from feeding material to AI, tho I wish this was more explicit in the language.

I'm curious if anyone else is in a union, especially in a teaching context, that's negotiated around AI in their contracts.

It almost sounds like the aim is to prevent universities from implementing fully automated course instruction, which feels like a distant concern. Aren't there more proximal problems that need to be hashed out? Forced use of AI in course CMS systems? Rights of instructors to limit use by students?

I LOVE the idea of fun notebooks and sticky flags to encourage annotation! I teach popular literature, and it's worked well for me in getting students to consider the mechanics of texts they consider trashy/bad/disposable. when they copy passage out, they see how much is actually happening.

Oh! I didn't know it's called "common placing" either (and I call myself an early modernist 🫥). I am tempted in small classes to supply nice notebooks, colorful pens, & sticky flags myself, to introduce students to the sheer delight of mapping ideas, tracing their thinking, and chatting with texts.

As next school year draws closer (eek), I'm curious to hear an update on your anti-AI defenses, if you're teaching? Policies, sure, but also how you're redesigning assignments and building guardrails. I might write something about all this.
