The 11th US Infantry was engaged in the desperate fighting in and around the Wheatfield at Gettysburg on July 2nd, 1863, suffering 125 casualties out of 306 engaged. Among them were Michael Fitzgibbons and John C. Mehan, formerly inmates at the Providence Reform School in Rhode Island (thread).

Cape Verdean Joachim Pease may have been the first native of Africa to have earned the Congressional Medal of Honor. He was awarded it for his gallantry under fire on the USS Kearsage during her sinking of the CSS Alabama on 19 June 1864. Pease was born on Fogo Island ca 1842. #capeverde

My relatives who landed in Normandy were the sons and grandsons of immigrants who were discriminated against in their time. Their brothers in arms included immigrants of different backgrounds, united to stop the spread of fascism, an ideology that was racist and xenophobic at its core.

Remembering Great Uncle Dominick Cioffi on the anniversary of D-Day. He was killed near St. Lo, France in July 1944 during the invasion of Normandy while serving in the 121st Infantry Regiment, 8th Division, US Army. His remains were returned to his hometown of Yonkers, NY in 1948.

Today is the anniversary of the Battle of New Market, most famous for the charge of the VMI Cadets.
