Our major new investigation is out today packed full of revelations about the oil and gas industry’s decades-long deception over natural gas. We show how big oil and gas created the myth of “clean” natural gas before deceptively marketing it as a climate solution. @climateintegrity.org

As Shell faces a landmark climate lawsuit, "confidential" documents from the 1960s show British scientist James Lovelock warning executives of the risks of burning fossil fuels. See his June 1966 memo published in full for the first time with my latest for @desmog.com

So, I finally did a TED talk, and it got released today. I seem to have been quite intense, but I'm grateful they left in my Trump joke. www.ted.com/talks/bill_m...
This report is intense and demonstrates how narratives of denialism were deliberatedly advanced by Shell. I do not like this idea of a World shaped by heroes and villains but sadly the influx of character caricatures makes it difficult to imagine reality in any other way.

Historians have a duty to teach about the lengthy, determined efforts by the oil industry to thwart our understanding of climate change despite knowing better. Nothing better encapsulates what the oil industry is like the proof that they knowingly endangered all life on Earth to protect themselves.
Rebecca JohnOverloading Earth with pollution could cause a “disaster global in scale” warned James Lovelock in a "Shell Lecture" from 1985 I discovered researching this piece. Better to show “respect proper to a living planet” than live "where we are no longer a favored species.” Prescient words hit hard now.

"We talk regularly about Big Oil, but it would probably make more sense to at least occasionally refer to it as Big Gas," writes @billmckibben.bsky.social in this vivid description of the natural / fossil / methane gas deception that draws on our new report from @climateintegrity.org

Why do we call fossil gas "natural" gas? A new report from @climateintegrity.org “shines a light on a decades-long public relations campaign by oil and gas companies to re-brand natural gas as ‘clean energy’” after internal company research found that methane emissions was fueling climate change.
Little by little, it’s getting increasingly easier to hold oil and gas companies accountable for their lies and harms Gift link to my column for @opinion.bloomberg.com www.bloomberg.com/opinion/arti...
