I don't have an election law take on Trump's speech because his brain does not exist in the same universe as any election laws.

I've lived in Beijing, and the thing is - they don't have elections.

Platner and his team managed to create an actual, credible campaign around a "concept of a candidate." He was a time-share-in-Florida candidate - the marketing is effective, people love the idea and buy, but eventually you find the place is built on a sink-hole.

And I worry that pointing the finger at social media (and Musk in particular) lets the people who actively worked to create the mirage -- who weren't evil billionaire oligarchs -- off the hook a bit too easily.

I realize this piece is mainly about social media effects, but unlike Spencer Pratt, it was the candidate, more than the campaign that was the mirage, and it wasn't created by social media as much as it was by the heady little world where consultants meet with influencers and donors.

Four years ago, Biden gave a speech warning about the dangers to democracy and the networks refused to air it because it was "political." I wonder if Trump making a partisan case for relitigating the 2020 election and calling for his political opponents to be jailed is going to be "political" too?

And in the end, folks like Matt and Welcome PAC don't just want Dems to run moderates in purple districts, they want them to run moderates *everywhere* so that there can never be the hint of a whiff on non-moderation which (they seem to believe) will stymie GOP attacks ads.

It's not that "run relative moderates in the other party's states/districts" is wrong, it's that it's so obvious both parties already do it. It's less effective now because voters are more straight-ticket and politics is more nationalized, not because political strategists forgot the one neat trick.
