To be fair to Trump, the on-off nature of his tariffs are not solely his doing. He ran and won on a mandate to raise tariffs, but domestic opposition remains deeply rooted and have thwarted most of his attempts.

I look forward to it. If I may be so bold as to propose an answer: it was captured by the large minority (perhaps a near majority, though now shrinking) who were the beneficiaries of outsourcing and immigration, who turned deaf ears to the pleas of the slight (but now growing) majority of losers.

It's extraordinary just how much capability once existed in Belfast. Shorts and HW are exactly the sort of highly technical businesses that we need to survive and flourish.

This is true in principle. but with decades of cheap imports, butressed with plenty of 'foreign investment', where is the industrial base? In reality GB imports for consumption and the 'investment' is people parking cash, not productive investment.

With a concerted and steady effort over the medium and king term, the manufacturing capability can be revived.
