I think Ripley was probably too overtly arthouse to generate a sustained rep. (Made worse by the fact boxset/streaming tastes have dumbed down significantly over the last couple of decades)

I think with both those, it was a case of the early bird getting the worm. Sopranos pretty much launched and defined the Prestige TV boxset era (and a fresh form of crime fiction). Mad Men later, but still part of a form-defining early wave.

Yes, the devil is in the details of those negative consequences. And - perhaps - the fact that there will *always* be some negative consequences, whichever way you jump. Criminalise drug use = lots of human misery. Decriminalise drug use = maybe still plenty of human misery. Less? More? Hmm....

Like I said, these aren't necessarily arguments I subscribe to, but I think what they highlight is the nasty (human) complexity of the issues. "Victimless crime" is a very bland phrase for what, in actual fact, are some potentially very explosive issues.

Similarly, with drugs, it's arguable that certain drugs simply should not be easily available to the public because of the social fallout. I can't see Over the Counter PCP being a good idea, for example.

So however much you might believe in a woman's right to choose to be a prostitute and a man's right to pay her for her services, that contract *in itself* represents a degrading of social norms. Looking at, eg, the millions of Tate-worshippers around the world, it's hard to argue against that.
