The trick is to think of the game like it's Monster Hunter. Stop treating the roll as invincibility and start treating it as a positioning tool and everything clicks.

So, while I'm still early in the game, the verdict on Dark Souls 2 so far: I'm really loving it! I GET why people hate it, completely, even without playing the SotFS version. It requires a slightly different mindset from DS3, but I'm still enjoying it a LOT.
