Recovering lawyer, minor public official, (very) former sf/fantasy editor, occasional painter. This is the account I admit to in public.

And why would we assume that someone who loves a book will also love a film adaptation, whether it's trying to stay faithful or not? The adaptation may miss or contradict everything the reader loved, and the reader, stung too many times, may spend the rest of a lifetime avoiding them.

Kate Glenn

Watching all this Jane Austen has me thinking about how there are film adaptations of literature which work hard to stay true to the text, and then there are adaptations that meander but convey the soul or meaning of the text, and then there are adaptations that use the text to make other points.

This is a remarkable result, though not a surprising one. OF COURSE at least half of us are refusing age-verification beyond that checkmark. What is there on the net these days that feels like it's worth it? Throw in a little FU and there we are: 50%-plus balk rates are everywhere.

Spoiler: This doesn't actually address the environmental case against that data center your zoning code just blocked. Not as it affects your local interests, anyway. It does suggest that maybe you shouldn't let AI write your emails or media posts for you, so there's that.

This. KOSA is an awful bill, that doesn't protect kids and makes all of us less safe, and it's horrifying how many of even our normally-reliable senators have fallen for it. Maybe some can be dissuaded before it's too late -- MA delegation, I'm looking at you.

Please continue to contact your senators and demand they oppose KOSA and the KIDS Act. Every vote torn away from this bill matters www.congress.gov/members/find...

There is a lot to say about the Nolan Odyssey movie. But one point that I think has not been emphasized enough is: this is a film about living in LA, as Nolan, my erstwhile British compatriot and age mate, has done for years. I gather it’s a strange place.

From the write-up at least, the poll conflates social democrats/policies with socialism, which in some ways makes this an even more surprising result. www.cnbc.com/2026/07/17/d...

Remarkable result that, *nationwide*, the left flank of the Dems is preferred to the mainstream of the GOP (admittedly, well within the MOE).

This. If we stipulate for the sake of the argument that the officer was acting in absolute good faith and genuine fear for public safety, that only tells us that DHS is putting people whose judgment is too poor to allow them to be LEOs on the street, which is a systemic catastrophe.

You need a lot more charisma than Seth Moulton can muster to pull off the Villain Laugh. And that's what I learned from today's Markey/Moulton debate.

Still? Again?? How are we supposed to keep up?

An elegant, if partial, solution to a nasty problem. Kudos to whoever's idea it was, to the legislature that passed it, and to Governor Pritzker, who at minimum was not afraid to sign it into law.

Incredible news. Illinois Governor Pritzker has signed a law removing testosterone HRT from the PDMP program, a program other states can use to access people's prescription records across state lines. It will protect trans people in IL from places like TX. Subscribe to support our journalism.

Dems' "Project 2029" first major policy proposal: an online child safety plan — narrowing Sec. 230, banning social media for kids under 16, promoting phone-free childhoods and more. Already backed by Cory Booker, Mikie Sherrill, Randi Weingarten + Jonathan Haidt. LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

Christ almighty. How are we stuck with these utter clowns?

Wow. And this, my friends, is why we struggle with "You must vote blue, NO MATTER WHO OR WHAT." (Sure, Trump/MAGA is an emergency and overrides normal considerations. But this is some fucking bullshit, and the mere prospect of being stuck voting for someone who'd do this is sickening.)

Criminal justice advocates say that plea deals that waive defendants’ Fourth Amendment rights permit police to violate the constitution. Virginia lawmakers passed a ban on these deals, but Governor Spanberger vetoed it this spring.

I'm getting this with political/public information posts. "I don't like your frame of Tolkien analogies in this post about public infrastructure! You work for The People, rewrite it without those floofy bits! Yeah, lol no. I do work for the people, but not like that.

ALSO THIS, which is so well-put. (And I swear this is the last thing I'll say about the word discourse.) To me is it not really the 'I don't know this word' that bugs me, it's the ask. You do not get to ORDER UP what an artist provides! You get what you get! When did this change?!!??
