And why would we assume that someone who loves a book will also love a film adaptation, whether it's trying to stay faithful or not? The adaptation may miss or contradict everything the reader loved, and the reader, stung too many times, may spend the rest of a lifetime avoiding them.

Watching all this Jane Austen has me thinking about how there are film adaptations of literature which work hard to stay true to the text, and then there are adaptations that meander but convey the soul or meaning of the text, and then there are adaptations that use the text to make other points.

This is a remarkable result, though not a surprising one. OF COURSE at least half of us are refusing age-verification beyond that checkmark. What is there on the net these days that feels like it's worth it? Throw in a little FU and there we are: 50%-plus balk rates are everywhere.

This. KOSA is an awful bill, that doesn't protect kids and makes all of us less safe, and it's horrifying how many of even our normally-reliable senators have fallen for it. Maybe some can be dissuaded before it's too late -- MA delegation, I'm looking at you.

There is a lot to say about the Nolan Odyssey movie. But one point that I think has not been emphasized enough is: this is a film about living in LA, as Nolan, my erstwhile British compatriot and age mate, has done for years. I gather it’s a strange place.

Wow. And this, my friends, is why we struggle with "You must vote blue, NO MATTER WHO OR WHAT." (Sure, Trump/MAGA is an emergency and overrides normal considerations. But this is some fucking bullshit, and the mere prospect of being stuck voting for someone who'd do this is sickening.)
