Sounds a bit dry, but it's the story of how Parliament, by dozens of small steps, relinquished its control over the Church of England, while leaving the appearance of establishment largely intact. All you ever wanted to know about the Parochial Church Councils (Powers) (Amendment) Measure 1949.

The waters have since closed over the controversy but the clock face in the church tower was the subject of furious letters to the Times.

I had the occasion to revisit that book for a conference paper recently, and saw no need to update the argument
