I don’t think capitalism is what’s destroying the economy. Trump is. Biden, the last democratic capitalist, had the right approach to the economy imo. And he had a super strong economy to boot. His blind spot, in my opinion, was the concerns that Abundance addresses.

I mean, no. I think it was sufficient. The ARRA was what he got through in his first year. It’s just that the voters didn’t apparently like that and handed House control to the GOP.

I know what a mixed economy is. I just don’t think the solution is becoming more socialist. You can make the case for an expanded administrative and welfare state. I just don’t think that’s socialist and I doubt most socialists would consider that socialist.

For example, I don’t think we should have a socialist (if it means towing the union line) policy on trade. I oppose protectionism, as I hope most Americans do when it very clearly makes life more expensive for ordinary people. Here the more neoliberal policy is actually better for ordinary people.

Yeah I think it’s more complicated than that. Like, even ignoring the “what socialism actually means“, I don’t think there’s a binary between corporate policies and socialist ones. Abundance, after all, is essentially expanding the government’s ability to provide. But you seem to hate it.

Yeah blame Congressional Republicans. They’re the reason why he couldn’t do much in the second half of his first term. Which people conveniently forget. Not that he didn’t substantially improve on the welfare state with the ACA.

That’s the other thing: I don’t think that any of the European economies are socialist. At best some of them social-democratic. But they also have important differences. I want Germany’s healthcare model more than Britain’s. And there’s some policies I wouldn’t change. I wouldn’t want French wages.

I mean, in most cases. It’s just I don’t think we need to be socialist to get there. Public housing, a public option, UBI, food aid, etc. I think will get us there and are all things I support. Meanwhile I still want a capitalist economy as FDR did.
