does anyone know of any work that’s been done on career trajectories of (UK humanities) academics who have been made redundant? eg information about how many go into school teaching, early retirement, independent research? appreciate this is complex, sensitive and much data is too recent

Does anybody have a book recommendation about the rise and fall of US school buses, as the leading form of mass transportation? Ie what about US sprawl and transportation led them to be popular here? To what extent are recent cuts caused by the same people who don't want taxes to fund transit? etc

Fantastic paper demonstrating how LLM editing is gradually distorting our writing and the way we think to write: arxiv.org/abs/2603.18161

I'm interested in finding and potentially supporting people who are interested in doing long-form writing on the big efforts in global health: Gavi, Global Fund, PEPFAR, etc. If this is you or someone you know, please make yourself known!

Your Bluesky account is a lot more than just a Bluesky profile. For instance, I also use @leaflet.pub (website/newsletter), @grain.social (pictures), @popfeed.social (movies, TV shows), @bookhive.buzz (books), @tangled.org (code), @margin.at and @semble.so (social bookmarks). #EconSky

Publishers: Would you like to write a textbook? Me: Maybe. Will I get paid a lot? P: Not at all. M: Oh so it will be affordable for students? P: Also no. M: But at least I can easily make edits after release? P: Definitely not. ….

Today, in middle-aged academics' rage, I learned that a paperback version of the course textbook I've used for 20+ years costs $265!! The electronic version, which requires students to read it through the publisher's proprietary software interface, is $98. RIP books! 😩

Other people have made this point, but it's crazy that universities haven't been supporting development of open-weight LLMs and forking over cash to the big players. I would trust LLMs way, way more if there was something that had the decentralized, open-source and repository-based structure of R.

Do educational opportunities skip generations? Cousins end up with similar schooling — but not because grandparents matter directly. Why? Bc their parents are siblings, and similar parents raise similar children. New paper in RSSM. Preprint: osf.io/preprints/so... @erc.europa.eu #sociology
