you can have neighbourhood of multimillion-dollar single family homes or you can have a vibrant, walkable neighbourhood of shops and restaurants but babe, you cannot have both in one place

the reason you do see more life in Kerrisdale is because the shopping centre is surrounded by high-rise and low-rise apartments, many built decades ago — mixed density!!! — which means there is actual foot traffic.

two days after Vancouver city council voted down their own Villages Plan, west side residents who opposed the plan en masse are complaining that Dunbar (!!) doesn’t have any wine bars, boutiques or gyms — the kind of amenities that require neighbourhood density to support

A warm congratulations to our faculty members Dr. Alan Richardson, Dr. Ori Simchen, Dr. Dominic Alford-Duguid, and Dr. Michael Griffin, whose research projects were awarded SSHRC project funding. 🎉 Read more about the successful projects: buff.ly/PZ9dK9M

A little Vancouver history. Back when creative spaces like the Western Front contributed to a pretty incredible music scene.

If the plan that Ken Sim personally promoted for years "disrespected Vancouverites and the process itself" then I wonder who Ken Sim is going to hold accountable for such a disrespectful action

A funny thing about Vancouver's Villages rejection happening so close to the election is Ken Sim's office posting a statement being like "we listen to the wisdom of the people" and ABC Vancouver sending supporters an email being like "we're protecting you from city bureaucrats who are garbage"

Great tribute to Michael Coyle (@oplopanax.ca) up at CBC. Surely just a start. He'll be sorely missed. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

This is Mike's partner Sylvia Fuller - I am so sorry to say that Mike was found unresponsive while mountain biking yesterday and died despite the best efforts of other riders and Squamish EMS. Thank you to Squamish Search and Rescue for carrying him out and taking care of our dog. We are shattered

One of my first follows. Hyperopinionated, backed up by a wide-ranging pragmatic intelligence & a clear moral compass. A real loss for his friends (many), this site, & what will now appear only as a long break in the TL, a caesura. We walked & hiked in many of the same places, somehow never met.

As many of us have been saying for so long, demolition of history and historical context, mixed with rampant speculation driving arts and cultural activity out of town... Well, who wants to visit that? Let alone live in it. #vanpoli vancouversun.com/opinion/colu...

Ok, I was up, here are my speaking notes, I'll post the video later on. Just got home and this opponent is saying she is literally panicking over the Villages Plan, even though she doesn't live in an affected area. Sigh. "If this was happening to one lot, I would be upset."

Wow... a speaker at the Villages hearing says the plan is fine for the East side... but the West side is far too classy and exclusive, and West side children need to be protected from things that are just fine on the East side.

In theory, the moral clarity and steadfastness demonstrated in this statement condemning Israel’s war crimes should be the bare minimum. But in the meantime, Mamdani is a giant among cowardly politicians.
