Philosopher of cognitive science & (analytic) philosopher of technology @ Purdue. Gamer in academia (brave). brettkarlan.com

Was at a party Sunday night with a bunch of parents from the West Lafayette little league teams, and the amount they precisely ranked which 10-year-old is a stud and which is a dud in center field would put Gil Harman to shame

Ethics 101 undergrad not understanding the point of thought experiments ass response

Like I've never heard anyone whine about the way philosophers write more than the computer scientists who review for FAccT. But then they're just like, "seems useful to have out there, accept." Imagine if philosophy had "seems useful to have out there" as a disciplinary standard for acceptance lmao

Holy shit

Working on it!!!!!

This is the kind of garbage that will NOT be tolerated going forward! Also I don't know how to UNDO RETWEETS but let this message serve as proof that I DO NOT ENDORSE THIS "MEME"

When you change nobody, or to and believes you

Lmao our last president was soooooo obsessed with us being AAU and it's like, if we really were as prestigious as you say we are, we wouldn't care about this!

So true!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111111!!!!!!!!1

I think the average review times (for non-desk-rejections) being upwards of like 7-8 months (with waiting a year for an R&R being a shockingly common occurrence) might be something that, again, is pretty common for philosophers but would shock anyone in a real, functioning field

If you believe people's websites, they're always writing four papers. But yes, I gather that (since we mostly single-author papers, even in the year of our lord 2026) most people usually have one or two papers under review at any given time

I am so incredibly jealous that you have all of the feallsanachd catalogue ahead of you

Bro almost got through just calling himself "a teacher in the philosophy department here at Yale University," but he just couldn't stop himself

0160

So it is happening, at least some of the time!

010

Yeah this is exactly what I was thinking. If we're giving jobs to the lucky SOBs that happen to get multiple papers through the top-5-journal gauntlet while still in grad school, that means we're directly rewarding playing the lottery. Might as well buy more tickets!

010

"Blessedness is not X, it is Y" AI slop??

(Or that's the thought anyway)
