We often talk about athletes reaching their physical prime. What fascinates me is that some aspects of their neurological prime may still be ahead of them. Their brains are still building the neural connections that support elite performance. 3/

The prefrontal cortex, which helps with decision-making, strategic thinking, emotional regulation, and adapting under pressure, continues maturing into the late 20s. White matter connections that make the brain faster and more efficient continue developing for years afterward. 2/

My siblings & I were babes here. Now, years later, the Spurs are Western Conference champions, & all I can think is how much I wish he were here to see it. Stroke changes lives. It changed ours. But the memories, the love, and yes - even the fandom - live on. Thinking of him today. ❤️ #Stroke

As Stroke Awareness Month comes to a close, I keep coming back to this photo. That’s my grandfather… a WWII veteran, proud Spurs fan, and one of the toughest people I’ve ever known. After a stroke, he spent his later years in a nursing home, but he never lost that Spurs spirit.
