Today marks the Day of Commemoration of the Great Upheaval. It began in 1755 when Acadians were forcibly removed by the British from their homes in present-day Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and P.E.I. Between 1755 and 1763, about 10,000 Acadians were deported on crowded ships. Thousands died.

When I was a kid, we drove the corridor to East Berlin, 1982, and some kids dropped a bang snap on our windshield from a highway overpass. Because of the diplomatic situation with the DDR, we were supposed to get a new windshield from the Soviets. We never did. I think my father is still bitter.
