Remember: There is nothing natural or inevitable about extreme inequality; it’s the result of an economic system that values wealth and power over human dignity and justice. It doesn't have to be this way.
Americans are working more, but losing control over their time. Unlike peer countries, the US has failed to pair a two-income economy with the policies that make that model sustainable, namely affordable child and elder care and serious workplace protections around scheduling.
That raise is long overdue, but it isn’t enough on its own. A stronger wage floor must be paired with just-cause protections, stronger enforcement against wage theft, and indexing the minimum wage so Congress can't let it stagnate for another 17 years.
Today marks 17 years since Congress last raised the federal minimum wage. It's the longest stretch without an increase since 1938. Adjusted for inflation, it’s at its lowest value in nearly 70 years, per @cepr.org. A wage floor that leaves workers in poverty isn't much of a floor.
