Korean cinema - and cinema generally. Writer for mostly now defunct websites and magazines and a contributor to the book ‘Directory of World Cinema: South Korea’

This, after all, is everything that any of us could and should ever need to ask for - “This ragtag group of misfits have little in common, character-wise (and one is a literal masked hologram), but are allied in their common commitment to their friendship and dedication to one another.”

It’s been a weird, exhausting, hot week so this evening I opted for a comfort double-bill of Kolchak - THE NIGHT STALKER and THE NIGHT STRANGLER. It hadn’t been too long since I last saw these but they’re so rewatchable - 1970s investigative murder-mysteries fused with horror and a touch of noir…

First time watch of the highly enjoyable THE SPIRAL STAIRCASE (Robert Siodmak, 1946). Murder! Mystery! Melodrama! Full of gothic atmosphere, trauma and gorgeously shot. The ‘whodunnit’ is a damp squib but it keeps up a nice pace/tension and really is a feast for the eyes. This is one I’ll revisit

Only time for a shortish film this evening, so now watching THE GOLEM: HOW HE CAME INTO THE WORLD (Der Golem, wie er in die Welt kam; Paul Wegener, 1920)

Thoroughly enjoyed MAD LOVE this evening - Karl Freund’s 1935 tale of a pianist who loses his hands in an accident and doesn’t realise they’ve been replaced with those of a murderous knife-thrower. These things happen I guess…

Now watching DEAD OR ALIVE (犯罪者, Takashi Miike, 1999) for the first time since renting it on its original UK home release. I really just remember being dumbfounded by it. I think it would’ve been on the Tartan Asia Extreme label - maybe even on VHS - and probably the first Miike I’d seen…
