If you're spending more time managing your social media than you are doing the thing you're advertising, I think your eggs are in the wrong basket. Yes, have a diverse skillset, but recognize when your job becomes "Social Media Manager" and no longer "Artist," & decide if that's what you want. (8/8)

I BEG YOU, do things for the love of doing them. Get GOOD at DJing just because you enjoy doing it. Take all the classes and workshops you want to become a better actor. Spend the 1000+ hours it takes to learn animation. Do these things because you want to DO THESE THINGS, not to get famous. (7/8)

This isn't to say that people who DO become skilled at social media are wrong for doing so. More power to them. But I reject a system of society that says your creations are only meaningful if millions see them, or that your skills are only valuable if you can market them en masse. (6/8)

I got into the things I do precisely because I didn't get the marketing thing. There are whole jobs to do that stuff for you. Actors get agents and managers. Musicians get agents and managers. These have existed for years because not everyone has the energy or willpower to play those games. (5/8)

It SHOULD be enough to be good at something. Hell, it SHOULD be enough to just ENJOY DOING something. Not every endeavor needs to be a multi-million dollar operation. Not every hobby needs to be a job. Not every idea needs to be a rigorous, structured career path. Art isn't one size fits all. (4/8)

We're not encouraging kids to try things they like. We're not helping people fully master their craft. We're telling them that unless they have big numbers next to their handle on social media, it's not worth doing anything. That's the message; "Be Popular, Or Give Up!" (3/8)

Every time I see something like "It's not enough to just be a good DJ," or "You can't just be an actor, you also have to be a promoter," or "You're not seeing success because you're doing social media wrong," it genuinely makes me cry. (2/8)

Somewhere along the way, the message changed from "You can do anything you put your mind to" to "it's not enough to just be good at something." I don't know how to fully articulate how, as I near my 40s, I get increasingly concerned about the ability of future generations to just DO things. (1/8)

Early on in my career, this is what helped me save up money for my big move to California. $25 here. $50 there. Short blurbs for a local car seller. A VOICEMAIL for a small company. Either it bought my meals for the day or it went towards a 4-year “moving out” fund. Now the small jobs don’t exist.
