For sure, a fascist driving a tank can break a lot of systems. But even then, resilience and the time it takes to fall is critically important. The structural failures outlined in that talk are one reason MAHA's "3-day SMO" against US science has been so effective, so fast, and so deadly.

There's room for a whole new "horseshoe theory of idiot medical policy" there, tracing links between anti-vax and anti-N95 misinformation and sketchy institutional medical politics. E.g. Wakefield was protected for over a decade by the same medical insiders who now pretend he was never one of them.
Mark UngrinLinking in a sidebar where @jonathanconp.bsky.social asked me for more details on the conflicts of interest I mentioned up at the top. This is important because of the deep links between the misinformation on aerosols spread via WHO policy, and MAHA/Trump/oligarch misinformation on vaccines etc.
If you're wondering how the orgs responsible for managing COVID, SARS, Ebola etc could fail so catastrophically, it's a *systems* failure. Yes, individuals do bad things - but the way out is to 👉fix the systems that enable them to do those bad things.👈 My talk on that (sources in slide deck):

Mark Ungrin🧵: Hunter was a core member of the WHO IPCRDEG-C19, which was the panel chaired by John Conly that led WHO policy in 2020 and wrote this paper, which explicitly recognizes that the precautionary principle required N95s for COVID, but then argued against them. It also cited that ludicrously...
And of course Loeb (also on Conly's IPCRDEG-C19 panel that led WHO's opposition to aerosol-appropriate PPE) worked with Conly to produce that incredibly sloppy 2022 study that wrongly claimed to show that N95s don't work better than medical masks. If you think the new HEPA study is bad, read this!
Mark UngrinAnd yes, that is the same guy... osf.io/preprints/me... Skim the intro, figures and conclusions. Then pick the bits you think can't *possibly* be that bad, and go through them in more detail. Preprint, but it doesn't matter because you can independently verify everything in it.
...why the pandemic was so badly botched. MAHA anti-vax misinfo, WHO anti-PPE misinfo, and the "evidence based medicine" industry are all just different tables at the same pseudoscientific country club. They feud over who's in charge, but they're collaborating to grab control over science. 🧵:
Mark UngrinFor anyone having trouble seeing the authoritarian connection between the EBM science cosplayers and Trump / RFK / "Wellness" types... "Paul can be considered a global expert in evidence-based medicine (EBM) and all things research methods given he completed his doctorate under the founder of EBM."
That Jefferson guy whose name keeps popping up (including as a panel member) was paid by the oligarch-funded organization that was the successor to the "Great Barrington Declaration" - this article is well worth reading to understand the how deeply WHO policy was influenced by them. Meanwhile...
Mark UngrinCollateral Global, what's that? I'm glad you asked! An anti-vax, anti-mitigations, anti-N95, COVID-is-no-big-deal-so-letting-it-rip-was-not-the-worst-medical-error-in-history GBD-successor organization, linked to the Alberta clown car report? What a surprise! bylinetimes.com/2021/05/07/t...
...silly 2015 study to claim that N95s interfere with breathing during pregnancy (another example of what happens when Dunning-Kruger replaces scientific and subject matter expertise). That study is so bad that even just citing it as evidence demonstrates ignorance of fundamental principles. 🧵:
Mark UngrinTBH this is basically the whole thing. I could probably have just posted this one image and everyone who's paying attention would understand. Pregnant nurses were tested while wearing a spirometry mask, with or without a small piece of N95 material taped over the hole. The...tiny...little...hole.
You just might find out... The dice are being rolled as we write. Exact same mistake as in 2020, just before they burned down the world. Maybe we'll get lucky - but the virus only has to get lucky once, and the people we're relying on are literally almost a century out of date.
Mark Ungrin🧵 For anyone wondering whether IPC and public health leaders are competent to manage Ebola, the answer is a categorical "no". Current WHO guidance, released May 17, 2026, is still based on the 5-micron error (p51 & 58), out of date since 1934. The quacks responsible should be in jail.

This is like letting doctors run RCTs on smoke detectors and it has to stop. NOW. It would be laughable if not so deadly. I repeat, medicine, the call is coming from inside the house. Please collect your 🤡🤡🤡. We are tired of watching this dangerous, bumbling incompetence. #AskAnEngineer FFS
The Conversation UKA large trial found no evidence that Hepa air filters reduce respiratory infections in care homes, challenging assumptions about their role in infection control.
Also, this is all from the same club of infection control and public health leaders who are in charge of the Ebola response. And if that doesn't worry you enough... ...take a look how they're doing it. It's like someone said "Remember how you 🤬'ed up with COVID? Do that again! Only worse."

🧵: Even a brief examination of this article highlights a number of issues that the @uk.theconversation.com should address. The lead author has an *immense* undisclosed COI to deny aerosol mitigations are effective, due to his role in the "very big mistake" that wasted "an enormous number of lives".
Mark UngrinBe careful what you wish for. These screenshots are from the WHO's official Twitter account in 2020, and a 2022 interview with the man who is currently the Associate Director General of the WHO (and previously its Chief Scientist). Even now there have been no consequences - or even investigations.
