We were very lucky to be there the evening this Powlet fledged, especially as she was a month earlier than expected. Normally we don't name the Powls we follow, but as she fledged on 4th July and tracked all the planes flying overhead, she named herself. Meet Jefferson. #birds #wildoz #brisbane

A new Powerful Owl family! We've been visiting this park for 5 years, with no signs of Powls. A good friend mentioned her friend had heard one there, and the area looked plausible. It was a wonderful surprise to hear a trill at dusk, even better to see 2 owlets the nest day! #birds #wildoz #brisbane

It's been an odd year for Powerful Owl's. Some already have owlets out, others, like this male, are still guarding their hollows. Male Powerful Owl in a Brisbane park yesterday. #birds #wildoz #brisbane

It was a windy day in Brisbane and this Powerful Owlet seemed to be hunkering down. It's an unusual position to see a POwlet in. After attacking some bark it made its way upright again. #birds #wildoz #brisbane

Another new POwlet! We think this was the first day out of the hollow! At dusk it's sibling was seen peeking out of the hollow, maybe today it will be joined by it's twin!. #birds #wildoz #brisbane

A weekend of new Powerful Owlets! Some seem a little early this year. This was a new pair and a new hollow for us, checking in a couple of weeks before fledging was due we saw this lovely out with her parents. The patterns on her chest suggest she's been out a while. #birds #wildoz #brisbane

A very early Powerful Owl chick who fledged 3 weeks earlier than expected. The female is usually nearby, she's slowing 'herding' it towards the more covered non-breeding roost. #birds #wildoz #brisbane

Checking in on the newly fledged Powerful Owlet yesterday. I think he's doing fine! #birds #wildoz #brisbane

Powerful Owlet day 2 out of the hollow. For a large floofy owl they can be surprisingly difficult to spot. This one's good at finding clumps of leaves to hide in, let's hope it stays that way as it's guided back to the non-breeding roost area. #birds #wildoz #brisbane

First Powerful Owl chick out of the hollow! 3 weeks earlier than expected. Something's up with the weather this year, all the POwls seem out of whack. We watched this one clamber out of the hollow last night fully expecting it to go back in. This morning it was roosting high near it's Mama! #birds

It's unusual to see a Powerful Owls brood patch. She'd normally be tucked in the hollow only venturing out at dusk. This pair abandoned their new hollow after a few weeks. Despite being almost 2 months late, they're checking out their original hollow, acting as if they're keen to try again🤞 #birds

Male Powerful Owl at dusk. Something has disrupted the Powls nesting this year, it's warmer and wetter than normal. This male was roosting with prey near a possible nest tree but when we heard the female calling from outside the hollow at dusk we figured they'd given up ...

A Female Powerful Owl looking out of her nest hollow. She popped out early, checked out the male's usual dusk-time roost, saw he wasn't there, or it was too light, then headed back down before emerging 20 mins later. I think she's a young Powl and this is her first nesting season. #birds #brisbane

A very exciting, and unexpected night!

The first Powerful Owlet of the season! When @lucyparkerpaul.bsky.social and I first heard the Owlet trilling from the hollow we were so not expecting it we thought "What's that sound that sounds like an Owlet trilling?". It'll likely be another month and a half before it comes out of the hollow.

When we saw this Powerful Owl roosting near the hollow we assumed it was the male. On closer inspection the 'nibbled' feathers suggest female. All the Powls we follow are at different stages. Some are still investigating hollows, some have just gone in, and tonight we heard the 1st chick trilling!

Powerful Owl with a bat in a Brisbane conservation park. Like quite a few others we follow this pair's female is yet to enter the nest, although they were both roosting 80m from the probable hollow. I suspect the recent rain and warm weather has had an effect. Hopefully cool, dry days help. #birds

Powerful Owls are part of the hawk-owl family. When they're being mobbed, it's easy to see why. This male was being mobbed by Noisy Miners, Butcherbirds and Currawongs while watching over a nest tree in a Brisbane park. #birds #wildoz #brisbane
