Apropos of nothing, the whole joke of these cartoon parents is that they are not very smart (compared to their genius son) and do not know best in many cases.

I have talked to many students like that (& myself haha), & it’s hard to talk through it with them. Once they get to me in college (+sometimes after work & family-building), it’s almost impossible for me to unpack & heal the damage of being the “precocious” one/being asked to live up to that title.

For people who stress about being perfect or reaching high standards, even among my own students, their half-assed work is almost always an A and always at least a B. It’s perfectly reasonably good work. Brains really trick us into anxiety so easily.

Exactly! Stressed over my thesis for 3+ years (even without the issues beyond my control) to get it “right.” After someone said, “done is better than perfect,” I focused on submitting what I had, half-assed it, & passed. 1 yr after candidacy, I submitted & successfully defended my dissertation.

Due to admin issues, perfectionism, & mental health, my thesis & dissertation got delayed for yrs, but I realized I could just do something else that I cared about less so I didn’t mind minor issues as much. A completed thesis/dissertation is better than making a perfect one. Got both done in 2 yr.

(“Silly” to them (but not me) has included work shifts to afford food, needing to sleep, being severely ill, having to see their therapist, etc. If I don’t say “silly” reasons are okay, a sizable portion will never use any flexibility options when they need it most)

I say this to students & myself all the time! Done is often better than perfect. Losing 5% on minor stuff is better than a late penalty on a “perfect” assignment, using AI & getting caught, etc. I even provide flexibility options, but I do have to tell them that they can use it for “silly” issues.
