I see it less as a problem with the Constitution class itself but rather the universe is full of horrors and threats that some were able to defeat and others not so much.

To be fair, the registration number seems less a count of actual starships they have and more just a specific range of designations meant for different classes. I admit I don't know how it works in the navy, I just mean I don't think Starfleet had 74,000 ships at one point.
