MPs should be listening more to the experiences of their constituents. And not just what people say on the doorstep. Most don’t go to meetings, or if they do might feel too intimidated to speak up. Especially if meetings are chaired by someone who gives preference to those they already know.

And they haven’t been replaced because no one would want to let rooms with all the rules that renters have nowadays. It wouldn’t be worth the hassle. I never even had a rent book! And you need bedsits to move around easily until you reach a place (occupationally and geographically) to settle in.

I always assumed I would have to move to find permanent jobs. And going back in my family tree that was normal. Yes, there were jobs locally but not enough to live on. One thing that’s happened is the lack of bedsits. My landladies and landlord of that era have probably died off now.

Also, any well-run business evolves to meet changing market and staffing needs, so tailoring courses to meet specific local requirements at any one time isn't particularly useful. Another disadvantage of having too many MPs without any actual business experience.

Andy Burnham has promised to bring in a new system of social care. But the government needs to address the desperately important issue of who owns and runs it. Privatisation has been a failed — we’re paying more for worse care while private equity sharks walk away with huge profit margins.
