This mosaic comes from the east church at Theodorias (modern Qasr in Libya 🇱🇾) & shows a fish sinuously swimming. Originally, the church had 50 mosaics on its floor. They have now been removed and placed in the nearby, purpose-built museum. 🕰️c540AD 📷 @jonalendering.bsky.social #MosaicMonday

New blogpost from me in which I present my IMC paper from this year for anyone who wasn't able to attend and might be interested. longhairedkingsblog.wordpress.com/2026/07/22/i...

Continuing with the animal theme! A new post on an unusual gift in a charter for Marmoutier, an obscure land measure, and the 'small creatures' about to become the monks' neighbours 🐇. alicehicklin.co.uk/2026/07/23/t...

Those Small Creatures Called ConiniThis very short document records a gift made by Géraud Rufus of Talmont, who appeared before the chapter of Marmoutier to gave some land at an unidentified place known as ad Saburas to honour Saint…alicehicklin.co.ukAlice Hicklin

I’ve (finally) made a blog to share some of the more intriguing charters I encounter 1st up: an 11th-century land sale where the price included “excellent cloth” called zafalbafal, possibly ṣūf al-baḥr, or sea silk, made from the fibres of Mediterranean shells 🐚 alicehicklin.co.uk/2026/07/14/c...

🔥⚔️ THE CRUSADES WERE NOT THE ENTIRE MEDIEVAL MIDDLE EAST! Our first Gloucester special sees @nicmorton.bsky.social rage that Crusades were a small part. Civilisations carried on, enemies traded and empires rose and fell. And mice making boats from pomegranates. 🐭🍎⛵ 🎧6 Aug #Medieval #History

Ancient history has gone global. This is surely the most exciting development in the field in the last 30 years! But what "global antiquity" is and how we should study it—and why anyone should care—are all open (and challenging) questions. Some thoughts on all of this for @aeon.co.

One of Bornholm's oldest and largest round churches, Østerlars kirke. Oldest bits from the 12th c. Dedicated to St Lawrence (Lars). Some of the church seems to have been used for military defense. The main round section has 3 levels that you can climb up to using the staircase in the wall!

It was great to present at the Leeds IMC last week and to hear so many great presentations on topics from dragons to sheriffs, and to see at least one powerpoint communicate research findings through memes! The social events were fun too. I enjoyed meeting everyone, hopefully I’ll come again!
