I also hate that we're just heading straight to rent-seeking behaviour like everything else. If they ditch discs, they can push subscriptions harder. You can pretty much guarantee that Sony exclusives will be released on plus with no way to actually own them. The Netflix model.

Both xbox and PS chasing the Steam Machine model seems to misunderstand that ultimately, the Steam Machine is just a PC. You can't make a closed system, exclusives-led console and say it's a PC. If I don't want steam, I can remove it. MS and Sony definitely won't allow that.

I feel like if you want people to be fully on board with digital purchases you need to ensure that they can play what they own on everything they own moving forward. Steam, for its faults, figured this out. I still have Steam games I bought in 2007.

I specifically bought a playstation because I wanted the blu-ray player, and I've made a point of buying physical discs for it because far too often I've lost whole swaths of digital purchases thanks to e-shops closing or hardware failures.

Looks like the Sony PR team has begun its consent manufacturing operation among the media in the past 24 hours. I wonder how many other gaming outlets and influencers this week will also happen to put up posts/articles/videos declaring that eliminating physical media from consoles is good, actually?

Microsoft engineered this so that it looked the least bad optically while at the same time still committing a slaughter, all so that Satya Nadella can still dick around with more useless AI horseshit. Fuck him and fuck Microsoft.
