UNC Asheville Arboretum - they call these "Red Hot Pokers."

Entomopathogenic fungus - probably a Cordyceps genus and this was more than likely some unfortunate ant that became infected. I read somewhere that there is a specific Cordyceps for every insect. Natures way of keeping tabs on the insect population I am assuming. I am no entomologist. 😒

A hornet of sorts. Unsure of the kind or species but one thing is for sure, I would not want to be stung by it.😱
