I know it's an ass pain and a slog but Ghost and buttondown exist and are right there and even have tools to help you transfer your old posts and subscribers. Please leave substack.

But remember, I don't work for a publishing company so am most likely missing necessary information about the process! But I think doing things like submitting to anthologies which pay a decent page rate can get you out there and help pay for your artist.

I would probably rely on already published work. Working in comics as a writer isn't easy. I don't think I've ever searched for a writer to hire, and it feels like the ratio of writers to artists is heavily weighted to writers.

When I'm looking for artists to hire for comics work, I need to see sequentials, but so few artists post their pages. I know it doesn't get the engagement on socials, but having a link to a portfolio site with pages is so useful (to me).

Tom was also maaayyybbee the best teacher I've ever had? And I say that as someone with 4 post-graduate degrees/certificates/diplomas. His motto is 'editing is empathy' but he brings that idea to everything he did. And was just so practical, organised, clear and damn. Yeah. So good.

I recently took the ELVTR Book Editing course with Tom Hoeler (Editorial Director at Random House Worlds) and I may have learned more about editing in those 8 weeks than I have in the last several years combined. It's already improved my work so much. I love learning. It's cool.
