“Quick-witted” ☕️

Working Class History

#OtD 1 Aug 1919 quick-witted locals in Liverpool took the opportunity of a strike of half of the city's police to begin rioting and looting. Beginning on Friday, they were only suppressed by Monday with the arrival of 3,000 troops stories.workingclasshistory.com/article/8050...

Correct me if I’m wrong (I might well be) but the US seems to be doing even worse than post Brexit Britain

Aaron Rupar

Bessent: "President Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton could not have imagined the economy that we would have created. It is the envy of the world."

The more I listen to @vonderleyen.ec.europa.eu the more I realise the Europe I was sold as a Cold War child (yes) is a solar system away with no desire to achieve transnationalism with the view of collective and mutual preservation of rights. What a pipe dream. It’s too late.

Camps in which detainees are routinely abused - including the rate of young teens’ pregnancies. That didn’t happen before the detention.

Guardian US

"A concentration camp, in its most basic definition, is a place where a targeted civilian population, not necessarily accused of a crime, is detained and at least some of their basic rights are suspended," writes @jwashing.bsky.social. "That’s precisely what’s happening in the United States today."

I assume Katja Ollongren was not tapped.

Ursula von der Leyen

I tasked two Commissioners to support to control the situation. @magnusbrunner.bsky.social is already working closely with Spain and is ready to travel to critical points. He will work on additional operational support to Spain, including through Frontex.

000

That’s not the take, Ursula. Fortress Europa never was.

Ursula von der Leyen

The images coming from Ceuta are unacceptable. We cannot allow anyone to come to our Union without abiding by our rules. Dangerous crossings must stop immediately. Smuggling networks must be dismantled. And returns must be swift, as our rules allow.

I can’t imagine the scale of the consequence on the far right’s discourse of “demographic replacement” but such mass waves need to always be contextualised - they never happen by happenstance or accident - and this will be a test for the Spanish PM

Libération

Des milliers de ressortissants marocains traversent depuis plusieurs jours la frontière qui mène à l’enclave espagnole de Ceuta, dans le nord du Maroc. Il s’agit de l’arrivée de migrants la plus importante depuis 2021. Notre direct : https://l.liberation.fr/Ykl

Actually had a conversation at work yesterday about this - could climate denial bring the national front down in the polls following the last few months of horror in France?

Isidore Poireau

Une fois élus, les maires d’extrême droite ne s’attaquent pas qu’à la culture et aux syndicats. Ils sabotent aussi des projets écologiques. Exemples dans trois villes du sud de la France reporterre.net/C-est-un-car...

The enforcement of the proscription of Palestine Action has been a true mirror of what policing can and cannot do. Faced with an extreme right wing threat that has been present, active, and growing in violence - including through pogroms - policing focuses on small s13 offences.

flyingrodent

Notice how incredibly silly it is that we have the police warning people not to commit terrorist offences, waiting quietly for them to reveal a t-shirt or something, and then arresting old people under anti-terror powers, who quite placidly accept being arrested.

I wonder if this - 21yo man committing suicide after years of racial abuse - will finally connect some dots in France, from speech and attitudes to dire consequences. Everyone is deploring this as if it was an inevitability. The National Front is so embedded in some regions it’s difficult to assess

Libération

Harcelé depuis des années en raison de ses origines, le jeune homme de 21 ans s’est donné la mort, dans une région où les déprédations d’extrême droite se multiplient ces dernières années. En parallèle avec la montée du RN. ➡️ https://l.liberation.fr/OiE

I’m not going to use the adjective “dystopian” because we are so far beyond qualifiers: it’s a reality. One of the myths about asylum is that one just has to claim it to receive it. The process is long, painful, and often, traumatic. Those are not experiences that can be distilled down to a formula

Dan Sohege

Many in the migrants' rights sector have been warning about exactly this. AI is absolutely not suitable for being used in asylum cases. Not only because of the risk of "hallucination", but also because it is unable to deal with the nuance and complexity. www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2026...

I love the concept of “invading Europe”, and not just because of all the countries European states have effectively invaded and colonised. Europe is not a homogeneous entity and never was.

Aaron Rupar

Trump: "They're coming from Africa, they're coming from South America, they're coming from different parts of Asia, and they're invading Europe. They're invading Europe! It's an invasion. And the UK is a prime suspect."

030

This is what we mean when we say strong, interdependent communities are a barrier to fascism. If someone comes at your neighbour, they have to come at everyone else.

Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani

We are a city of immigrants, and our long tradition of offering safe haven to all, as well as our laws, reflect that. To every immigrant New Yorker living in fear today: you belong here. And anyone who wants to come for you will have to come through your neighbors and fellow New Yorkers first.

I was one of those early recipients of the vaccine, so basically tested it for everyone else. I have never heard in small and broader circle that there had been any complications for any of the three available patented ones. I was sick for a few days. Try the typhoid vaccine and get back to me.

Aaron Rupar

Sen. Roger Marshall: "Who didn't have a friend who took this vaccine and had some time of complication? A stroke, a blood clot, a young man getting some type of heart inflammation. That's what destroyed the trust in the American people for our government."

As we were discussing yesterday, it seems this dangerous and vindictive corner of online radicalisation can only engage in lawfare, that is heavily and externally funded, to pressure and impose. This isn’t a legitimate exchange of views. But human rights are not subject to debate. Hence this.

Happy Cable Street Day for all those who celebrate, and for those who don’t, please start working towards getting there

Living in Belfast means the dichotomy of being worried about paramilitary activity and being very excited about the Fleadh rolling in - between East Side Arts and Feíle, and this year Fleadh Choil na hEiréann, that please, please can we have some relief and joy for 4 weeks. Please Belfast be normal
