"We must work. We must make money. But more than that, we must experience everything, not just the good. But degradation, horror, sadness. This makes us whole. Makes us people of substance, not flighty, untouched children. Then we can know the world. And when we know the world, the world is ours."

In my early 20s, I worked for a year as a cook in a one-man kitchen for a burger + ice cream place, where we killed time inventing novel food combos. My proudest achievement was the Wafbasa: A kielbasa sausage deep fried in waffle cone batter topped with hot fudge. It was unironically delicious.

Some of you STILL haven't learned how to compartmentalize your online lives and it shows.

But most smart critics will skip past arguments about human nature and simply point out that socialism relies on Central Planning.

Jacobin

Critics of socialism frequently charge that it rests on an overly optimistic view of human nature. The truth is that socialists want a system that guards against tendencies to greed and domination.

Are any other software devs feeling more like spellcasters and less like programmers these days?

Getting LLMs to do EXACTLY what you want, rather than something in the ballpark, requires you to use words that push the LLM towards the relevant wordspace for the solution. That means you have to speak (and think) like a professional to get professional results. Your job is safe.

You gotta be shitting me. The online IRS EIN application form has business hours???

I think you gotta stop at paper maps though, cause "ride 3 days north" does not sound fine.

Tim Carmody

Paper maps and handwritten directions were fine. We got where we were going fine. What we’re doing now is fine too. It’ll all be fine, even whatever holodeck bullshit is yet to come will be fine

Work convo about best uses of corn triggered a memory. My first elote was at the Texas/Mexico border in Reynosa on a youth group trip. The traffic goes for hours, so the vendors just walk up to your window. Never expected such a flavor explosion from a random drive-by food guy. Life changing.

There is nothing quite like the feeling of solving someone's business-critical tech problems while taking a shit.

They're going to call you a dickhead regardless. So be a dickhead.

This is perhaps worth celebrating because yay humans, but the engineering VP comes off as an idiot here. "Mistakenly, we thought that by just introducing artificial intelligence and ingesting the design requirements that we had, that would produce a high-quality product" www.bbc.com/news/article...

A browser-attached IDE that allows you to make changes to other website files/markup and store the changes locally, so the next time you visit, you get the same changes. You have your own custom, forked version of every site!

Witnessed an AI miracle today, and this line from its response really says it all: "No data or logic change — just a ~17,000x reduction in rows examined per call."
