The missing link here is Nobuo Nakagawa’s Ghost of Yotsuya—which desperately deserves a restoration, alongside other greats of Kaiki cinema
Michael FeinbergI might go further; I mean, I’m not even entirely certain that there’s a direct line of continuity between, say, “Kwaidan” or “Ugestsu” and the tropes people now think of when they hear the term “J-Horror.”
Such a damn masterwork. The primal drums of the opening, how it marries slow burn dread with feral emotion, how bizarrely experimental yet beautifully classical it is. Better than Onibaba by my reckoning. Love Kuroneko.
JayceKuroneko, Kaneto Shindô (1968)
I'm excited to finally share that my @nighttidemag.bsky.social essay investigating the etymology of "J-Horror" is being printed in my colleague Tom Mes' amazing book! I grew up reading Tom's work, so this is really a hell of a thing that I can't believe is real. On sale 8/27 at Frightfest!
After working on this case professionally, I need there to be full closure on what happened to the Yuba County Five and for someone to find Gary Mathias.
G. Willow WilsonWhat's your personal great white whale of an unsolved mystery? The thing you desperately hope is solved before you die because you need to know the answer? Mine is the Isabella Stewart Gardener Museum heist. Where the hell are the Rembrandts. I need the full story
COLONY is a gory delight. I'm such a mark for movies that make a contagious cosmic gumbo of hive mind horror and Irwin Allen disaster movies. It's a film about stepping up and working together, especially when the dead have you beat on that front! What a blast. #Fantasia2026

The soundtrack for DRIVE is pretty much untouchable, and it all kicks off at 100% with Kavinsky's Nightcall. It just makes an ordinary night out feel so epic. I think about the cut at 2:07 between Gosling hitting the lights and the overhead synth sting way too much. A day of tragic losses. RIP.
This is so damn heartbreaking. RIP to a man who made such beautiful, transcendent music www.bbc.com/news/article...
SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY – Man, my favorite thing about the Holland run is that he just *gets* both Peter Parker and Spider-Man. A good kid trying his best to make everyone's lives better, even in spite of others' (and his own) limits. Surprised at how choked up I got during this one!
Now watching!
I had a great time with Takashi Shimizu's latest, THE MOUTHS. This adaptation of a novella by Sesuji (About a Place in the Kinki Region) takes some remarkable formal swings – has a Brechtian kinship with The Vast of Night and Monolith as it does his previous Ju-on films. Fun stuff. #Fantasia2026
